Do you have an urge for something new or a longing for the familiar? Do you find it easy to adapt to changing circumstances and when does constant change become overwhelming? How does your body react to private, social and (climate) global changes?

The huge panels of orange fabric hanging in the space, covering the entire floor and the audience's legs are like the connective tissue of a large organism. Every turn leaves creases on them, every movement can be felt by everyone through the stretched material. It is an intertwined system that is emblematic of private relationships, our society as a whole and the interdependence between humans and nature. The three performers test the resilience of this world until it collapses. They use this moment of radical change to reflect on their own reaction patterns.

The performance collective Merle | Mischke | Klee together with the fashion designers and visual artists Guusje de Bruin and Sarah Kerbosch, transform the stage into a landscape made of a wide variety of recycled materials. Space, body, text, light and sound melt into various motifs reminiscent of evolution and metamorphosis. The dancers Coralie Merle and Mark Christoph Klee as well as the spoken word performer Jasiek Mischke make tangible what it means to be in constant transformation and to deal with ever new circumstances.

The interest in investigating transformative processes and their effect on the body in different analogue and digital performance contexts arose in a joint Flausen+ research residency in 2020. “Why change? Are you not ok with how things are?” marks the end of a four-part series. An Augmented Reality scene in a printed magazine, an interactive website and a site-specific performance for rural areas were also created.

educational activities

The collective offers dance workshops and open rehearsals for adults and young people from 14 years of age on. In combination with a theatre visit these participatory activities allow especially a first time contemporary dance audience to get a deeper understanding of the performance.

"Why change?" is a production of Merle | Mischke | Klee and was co-produced by Theaterwerkstatt Pilkentafel Flensburg. Rehearsal residencies were made possible by Dampfzentrale Bern (CH) and TILT (NL). The project is funded by the Ministry of education and training, science, research and culture of the state of Schleswig-Holstein and is supported by Fonds Darstellende Künste with funds from the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and Media within the program NEUSTART KULTUR. The creation of the set was made possible by Creative Industries Fund NL.

Almost all fabrics used in the performance are recycled or come from the discarded material of flag, sail or parachute manufacturers who support the project as sponsors: Intervlag, Veluwse Vlaggenindustrie, Hanse Sails, Humanoid, among others.
