"I'm looking at you. You look at me We look at each other. ”These words come up again and again in the dance piece. The result is a duet between the violinist Tonio Geugelin and the dancer Mark Christoph Klee, in which the gaze between the two performers and the audience is central. The playful scenes do not follow a narrative, but are strung together motifs from movement, music and spoken text, all of which examine facets of a first encounter.
The performers approach each other carefully, introduce themselves, keep eye contact, dare a first touch, share quiet moments that feel like an eternity and play a game with their own expectations and those of the audience. Geugelin and Klee alternate between demonstrative presence and a private being-together. This also changes the view of the audience - sometimes they are addressed directly, sometimes they are just observers.
The huge fabric cubes and curtains are created by the visual artist Jasiek Mischke. The decor transform any location into a temporary stage and influence the mood of the piece with their colorful playfulness. Coralie Merle accompanied the rehearsal process and worked as a dramaturge.
For the first time Merle | Mischke | Klee is working with live music and has found a musician in Geugelin who has not only written completely new compositions for “Ich guck Dich an”, but also takes great pleasure in exploring movement himself. The collective often plays on theaters and exhibition rooms in larger cities. With “Ich guck Dich an” they want to create first encounters between their work and an audience that is new to dance in rural regions of Schleswig-Holstein. For that reason the duet can play in calm public space or spacious halls and community centers.
